Gaslighting is an extreme example of psychological abuse – by a seriously disturbed/obsessive individual; designed to acquire power over their chosen victims. Narcissists derive pleasure in using manipulative tactics for personal gain, and in this case to cause anxiety and confusion – so their targets doubt their own perception of what is real.
This can take the form of constant criticisms [victim blaming], with occasional praise to lift up the mood momentarily; in order to knock it back down later. This tactic, when repeated often, interferes with the body’s own emotional defence mechanisms; causing physical harm too. The victims self-esteem plummets and they constantly walk on eggshells to avoid confrontations. Many end up with complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, other mental health issues or are driven to suicide as they cannot take any more, which is tantamount to murder. The narcissist smears the victim to ensure that no-one comes to their defence – & to isolate them from family and friends – to make them feel completely alone and helpless.
